The STOP-BANG score is a clinical calculator used to assess the risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in patients. The acronym stands for Snoring, Tiredness, Observed apnea, high blood Pressure, Body mass index (BMI), Age, Neck circumference, and Gender, which are the eight factors considered in the score.
This calculator is applicable to the general adult population, particularly those who present with symptoms of sleep apnea such as excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, observed episodes of breathing cessation during sleep, and abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking.
The clinical utility of the STOP-BANG score is to identify individuals at high risk for OSA who may benefit from further diagnostic evaluation, such as polysomnography. It is a simple and effective tool that can be used in both primary care and preoperative settings to screen for OSA.
There are no specific exclusion criteria for the use of the STOP-BANG score. However, it may not be as effective in populations with a low prevalence of OSA or in patients with other sleep disorders.
